EFFLEURAGE The masseuse’s hands mold themselves correctly to the dog’s body in effleurage (see left).

First Steps: Preparing for Massage

It is vital to take massage slowly, particularly at first. If your canine client shows any signs of restlessness, stop immediately—forcing her to have a massage is counterproductive and will end up frustrating you and her. If when massaging your dog you discover a hot spot, be careful—the muscle there may be inflamed or strained. Work carefully and if your dog seems in any distress consult your vet. Before using the techniques of effleurage (see p.77) and petrissage (pp.80–81), try the following general introduction to canine massage (it also makes a great pre-massage).

At the start of any session approach your dog gently, offer her your open hand, and wait for her to nuzzle it in traditional canine greeting.

TOP MASSAGE AREAS These areas are sensitive and rich in nerve endings and so great for massage.
